Method and appliance for processing waste, in particular dried domestic waste, by pyrolysis. The waste or its solid pyrolysis product is conveyed continuously through a rotary furnace (1) containing a rotating, heated furnace drum (2), pyrolysis gas being generated and discharged continuously. The object of the invention is to prevent both the ingress of air and the escape of pyrolysis gas. This object is achieved by introducing the waste via a charging lock (19) co-rotating with the furnace drum (2), and the solid pyrolysis product is discharged via a discharge lock (2) likewise co-rotating with the furnace drum. In the process, the waste or its pyrolysis product, respectively, is purged in each lock with an inert purge gas, the air-containing purge gas from the charging lock (19) being vented to the environment, and the pyrolysis gas-containing purge gas from the discharge lock (32) being passed into the furnace drum (2) and being mixed with the pyrolysis gas. Preferably, in each case at least two-stage charging and discharge locks (19 and 32, respectively) are used, and the waste and its pyrolysis product, respectively, between the lock stages (20, 21, 22 and 33, 34, 35, respectively) are exposed in a free-flowing state to the inert purge gas. <IMAGE>
