The invention relates to an electrically operated domestic appliance, such as a hand-held hairdryer, a hair styler or the like, having a housing for accommodating electrical devices, such as a motor, heater, fan or the like, which can be switched on and off by means of a switch. The domestic appliance has a multicore cable on whose free end a plug is arranged which, for its part, interacts with a plug socket connected to an electrical power supply network. In order significantly to improve the safety for the user of such an electrically operated domestic appliance, the cable plug is provided with a safety switch for multipole disconnection, preferably two-pole disconnection, of the multicore cable. In this case, the plug consists of a plug lower part, which has the plug pins, and a plug upper part which is like a housing and is connected thereto. A multipole, preferably a two-pole, safety switch which is known per se, such as a two-pole changeover switch, is accommodated in the interior of the plug upper part.
