A high intensity laser light beam (104) is directed at a rotating splitter wheel (120) formed with alternating segmented apertures (130) and segmented spokes (132) formed with reflective surfaces, whereby the beam (104) is periodically interrupted to divide it into a first pulsed beam (170) which has passed through the apertures (130) of the wheel and a second pulsed beam (172) of substantially identical intensity which has been reflected by the spokes (132) of the wheel. The two substantially identical pulsed beams travelling along different optical paths are directed by mirrors (182, 192) and focussed by lenses (174, 176) onto opposite sides of a workpiece e.g. opposite working flanks (74) of a gear tooth (114) so as to laser-harden both flanks of the tooth simultaneously without back tempering. |
