The method according to the invention consists in producing, during a first phase, on a plane support 160, a "mannequin (tailor's dummy) layout" ABCDEMNPQA, which represents the approximate developed form of the person's body, this "mannequin (tailor's dummy) layout" being obtained with the aid of a suitable arrangement of layout elements comprising elements of a first type ABCDE, each having a shape which has been pre-established as a function of at least one dimension which is characteristic of the person, and elements of a second type EM, NP, whose shapes are defined simply on the basis of the shapes of the elements of the first type and of the measurements of the person, and in producing, during a second phase, the layout of a pattern corresponding to the desired garment style, on the basis of the previously prepared "mannequin (tailor's dummy) layout". This method enables a perhaps inexperienced person very rapidly to produce a pattern. <IMAGE>
