PURPOSE:To maintain a bistable state and to obtain a perfect memory effect by incorporating a photoisomerization reactive material into at least either of oriented films on electrode surfaces. CONSTITUTION:This ferroelectric liquid crystal element consists of two sheets of substrates 1, 9 coated with the oriented films on the electrode surfaces and a ferroelectric liquid crystal 7 and is constituted by incorporating the photoisomerization reactive material into at least either of the oriented films 3, 4. The liquid crystal orienting capacity of the oriented films can, therefore, be changed by combining two sheets of the substrates 1, 9 after rubbing of the oriented films, then subjecting the oriented films to photoirradiation with the phase on the higher temp. side than a chiral SmC phase. The element does not receive the force to control the orientation bearing in the chiral SmC phase and the bistable state is maintained according to this method. The memory effect is thus easily obtd. |
