The grip wheel comprises a frame (6) securable coaxially to a vehicle wheel or axle with strakes (11) radially slidable on the frame and spider (18) secured to a fixed part of the vehicle and about which the frame is rotatable via rollers (20). A central hub (13) has the strakes connected by pivoted links (12) rotatable on it. The central hub is movable on the spider by a piston and cylinder (16), to provide a centre of rotation of the strakes which is offset from the centre of rotation of the grip wheel frame. As the vehicle wheel or axle rotates, the strakes are progressively displaced relative to the frame to be fully extended at the ground contact area and fully retracted at the top. |
