A method for charging maintenance-free, sealed accumulators, in particular lead accumulators, which are equipped with pressure-relief valves which open when the pressure in an accumulator cell exceeds a limit value, the charging taking place in a main-charging phase and an additional-charging phase and in the additional-charging phase the voltage at begin of gassing being exceeded and a recombination of the gases H2 and O2 produced at the electrodes being striven for, the charging being carried out in the additional-charging phase in each case alternately with the evolution of gas until an overpressure lying below the limit value of the pressure-relief valve is built up in the cell and subsequently a charging interval being taken, in which the overpressure in the cell is at least predominantly reduced again, can be shortened in time if, under certain preconditions, the minimum interval time is reduced to half an hour and/or the length of the charging and interval time is determined by virtue of a pressure measurement in the gas space of the cell (2). <IMAGE>
