The invention relates to an inking unit for printing machines, in particular for double printing units on web-fed rotary printing machines with ink supply from the top. The object according to the invention, which consists in providing a short inking unit for the ink supply from the top, is achieved in that the screen roller disposed ahead of the printing forme cylinder and the ink applicator rollers of the upper inking unit are functionally assigned a metering system which is formed from the combination of a wedge-shaped ink fountain, which is known per se, consists of an ink feed roller and an ink knife and constitutes the preliminary metering system, and from an ink accumulation space consisting of the ink feed roller, the screen roller and a doctor blade which is operatively connected to the screen roller. With the metering system according to the invention, it has been possible to develop a short inking unit for the ink supply from the top which is similar to the short inking unit which was previously suitable solely for the ink supply from the bottom on double printing units. Even in this case, a clean ink supply and an even and accurate ink metering are now ensured with an extremely low number of inking rollers. <IMAGE>
