<p>An adjustable speed inductor type rotating dynamoelectric machine (2), capable of high speed operation, employs a stator assembly (4) incorporating a spool-like support structure (10). A central, generally cylindrical portion (12) of the support structure (10) supports field windings (22) while radially oriented end portions (14) of the spool-like structure (10) mount and accurately position a circumferentially distributed plurality of C-shaped armature core elements (26). Radially directed, angularly spaced grooves (16') in the outer surfaces of the end portions (14) receive legs (34) of the C-shaped armature elements (26) and serve to precisely position these elements in three orthogonal directions. The central portion (12) of the armature-field winding support structure (10) may be made of electrically conductive material to provide a flux shield and dissipate heat. For additional ventilation, cooling ports (20) may be provided in the central portion (12) of the spool-like structure (10) which cooperate with extended recesses (42) in a coaxial rotor (40). The rotating rotor (40) centrifugally propels cooling fluid (56) through said ports (20) into the spaces occupied by the field windings (22) and armature windings (24).</p> |
