A roof support for use in a mine having a loose floor, in which during advance of the roof support may dig into the mine floor. The roof support includes: - a floor engaging structure having a main portion and a toe portion; - a roof engaging canopy; and - a roof supporting means mounted on the roof support so as to act between the canopy and the main portion of the floor engaging structure. The toe portion of the floor engaging structure is pivotally connected 6 to the main portion and is provided with means 14, 15 which can lock the toe portion relative to the main portion in a roof supporting mode. This enables the roof support to be advanced without the toe portion of the floor engaging structure digging in to the loose material on the mine floor. This type of roof support may have either a pontoon or a platen floor engaging structure. <IMAGE>
