The apparatus for aligning end papers is used in adhesive binding machines. For alignment, the end papers (1) of the book block, diverted by suction nozzles (10), are transferred to alignment rulers (15) on the guiderails (13). The determination of the end papers (1) is effected, according to the invention, by contact pressure rollers (17) positioned laterally on the guiderails and inclined in the transport direction, which press the end papers (1), with the assistance of spring force, onto the alignment rulers (15) and against the guiderails (13). The transport of the book block takes place during the alignment by means of an entraining chain (3) which transfers the material for processing to a block transporting device. Adjustment elements are provided for adapting the device to changing formats of the material to be processed. <IMAGE>
