发明名称 METHOD FOR CONTROLLING ORIENTATION OF LIQUID CRYSTAL OPTICAL ELEMENT
摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain good reproducibility and high orientation by holding a ferroelectric liquid crystal in place between a pair of substrates, one of which consists of a transparent substrate having a transparent conductive film, and oscillating the substrates in this state. CONSTITUTION:The ferroelectric liquid crystal 5 is held in place between the transparent substrates 3 and 4 respectively having the transparent conductive films 1, 2. The one substrate 4 is fixed to a fixing base 6 and an oscillator 8 of an oscillating element 7 for driving is mounted on the other substrate 3. The oscillating element 7 is driven to apply the oscillation to the substrates 3, 4 by using a device disposed with the entire part of the substrates in a thermostatic vessel 9. While the shearing by this oscillation is applied to the substrates, the temp. of the thermostatic vessel 9 is regulated to slowly cool the entire part of the liquid crystal 5 from the temp. of an isotropic phase or the mixed phase of said phase and smectic A phase or the mixed phase with a chiral smectic C phase down to the temp. for completion of the orientation thereof, thereby orienting the liquid crystal. The ends of the two substrates 3, 4 are sealed by an adhesive agent, spacer, etc., by which the desired liquid crystal optical element is obtd. The liquid crystal optical element of the high orientation having the good reproducibility is thereby obtd.
