Manufacture of an article 1 incorporating a thermosetting-powder surface-coating 2 includes bonding a component 4 of the article to the coating 2 by contacting the melted powder with the component 4 before curing takes place, and maintaining it in contact through curing (Figure 2). In a glass architectural panel, an aluminium foil 4 is bonded in this way to a polyester/triglycidyl-isocyanurate powder coating 2 on the silane-primed back of the facing glass 1; the metal foil 4 is backed by a plastics or rubber open-cell material 5 to enhance resistance of the glass 1 to impact, and also, together with the foil 4, resistance to thermal shock. The coating 2 includes pigmentation to give the effect of coloured glass, or is clear to allow the contact-surface of the foil 4 to show through; further decorative effect 26 is obtained by pigmentation variation in the coating 25 and/or partial metallization of the glass back-surface (Figure 3). The technique is also applied to bonding fittings 29 to the powder-coated face 27 of a door 28 (Figure 4); of decals 33 of cured powder-coating material to (or within) a powder-coating 35 (Figure 5); of glass 36 over apertures in metal walls 38 (Figure 6); and of glass 41 to glass 42 in building up a laminate (Figure 7).
|
