PURPOSE: To simply, inexpensively, quickly, and realistically express the material impression of a substance by calculating the color and luminance of a graphic based upon retrieved characteristic data and displaying the graphic on a display face based upon obtained material impression data. CONSTITUTION: The material data of a substance corresponding to graphic data are read out from material data memory 14, a material impression expression data table 15 is retrieved and corresponding characteristic data, i.e., a reflection factor characteristic curve for the wavelength of light and a reflection factor characteristic curve for an incident angle, are extracted. Color data corresponding to the material of the graphic are calculated based upon the reflection factor characteristic curve for the light wavelength. The mirror face reflection factorω(θ) of incident lightθis found out based upon the reflection factor characteristic curve for the incident lightθand the luminance I of the graphic is calculated by each pixel of a CRT display 7. After ending the calculation of all pixels, hidden-surface erasing processing and shadowing processing are executed based upon prescribed algorithm and the obtained graphic is color- displayed on the CRT display 7.
