PURPOSE: To reduce the influence of unsharpness of an image by modulating the intensity of a scanning beam by a controller, and irradiating an accumulative fluorescent layer with maximum lightness while the scanning beam has a 1st time width and completely cutting off while the scanning light beam has a 2nd time width. CONSTITUTION: A laser 5 is clocked in a pulse shape and illuminates with the maximum intensity within the 1st time width t1 and the laser beam 7 is completely cut off within the 2nd time width t2. When a measurement time T for one image point is longer than the rise time and fall time of the accumulative fluorescent body, an output signal is made to correspond to one image point of an X-ray image immediately. When the measurement time is shorter than the time, on the other hand, a computer 14 connected to a reproducing circuit 11 calculates an actual stimulation signal digitally by measuring light emitted between a dark phase and a light phase. Consequently, a speedy image read can be made and there is no influence spoiling the sharpness of the image.
