PURPOSE:To improve a heat resistance and a heat shock resistance of a catalyst carrier by forming a honeycomb construction made of cordierite of a specified chemical composition and by specifying values of its porosity, volume ratio of micro pores and coefficient of thermal expansion in a gas flow direction. CONSTITUTION:Specified amounts of talc with an average grain size of 5-15mum, alumina with an average grain size of 2mum or smaller, highly pure amorphous silica with an average grain size of 12mum or smaller and other raw materials for cordierite formation are blended so as to make a chemical composition of the main component to be 42-56% SiO2, 30-45% Al2O3 and 12-16% MgO in weight. Next, an organic binder and a plasticizer are added to this blend, mixed and kneaded together to get a material for extrusion. This material is extruded to a shape of honeycomb construction and then burned at a temperature of 1,350-1,440 deg.C. A cordierite honeycomb construction catalyst carrier is thus produced. |
