PURPOSE:To obtain satisfactory bistability and to secure satisfactory storage characteristic by orienting liquid crystal molecules uniformly over the whole surface of a panel by arranging to reduce the difference between the surface polarity of an upper and a lower orientation film formed on a pair of transparent substrate to a small value. CONSTITUTION:Film thickness of an orientation film 21 on a rear glass transparent substrate 11 having a transparent electrode 12 comprising ITO, etc. formed thereon is made thicker than the film of an orientation film 15 faced oppositely thereto interposing ferroelectric liquid crystals 14, and only the surface of the orientation film 15 is subjected to orientation treatment. Thus, the intensity of each surface polarity of the film 21, 15 faced oppositely to each other interposing liquid crystals 14 is balanced by adjusting the film thickness of the film 21 to the thickness so as not to result any difference of surface polarity between the film 21 and the film 15. By this constitution, liquid crystal molecules are oriented uniformly over the whole surface of the panel, and satisfactory bistability is obtained. |
