PURPOSE:To produce a sufficiently dense sintered beta-sialon, by sintering a powder molded article having a sialon composition in the presence of a silicon oxide in an inert gas atmosphere in a furnace. CONSTITUTION:Powder consisting of silicon nitride and an aluminum compound and providing beta-sialon after sintering is molded into a given shape. The powder molded article together with a silicon oxide such as silica is fed to a sintering furnace and sintered in an inert gas atmosphere such as nitrogen gas at about 1,700-2,000 for about 1-10hr. In the operation, the silicon oxide is molded into pellets and placed adjacently to the powder molded article. The amount of the silicon oxide is 0.1-20wt.% based on product weight. Consequently, a sufficiently dense sintered beta-sialon shown by the formula Si6-zAlzN8-z (0<z<=5) is obtained. |
