The invention relates to a compressor of the reciprocating piston compressor type in which a significant reduction in the "dead space" is obtained. This is obtained by locating, on one face 25 of the piston 3 pointing towards a delivery orifice 14, a boss 40 which occupies the greater part of a space formed in the delivery orifice 14 when the piston is at a top dead centre position P1. <IMAGE>
