A curved, scratched window to be refurbished is placed against a plate 10 with either its convex or concave side facing the plate such that a flexible lip seal 24 protruding from the front face of the plate is engaged by the window. A vacuum is then applied to a network of channels 26 of the plate 10 to pull the window flat against the plate 10 and cause the window to push the lip seal 24 flush with the surface of the plate. The plate 10 is then rotated about an axis 20 and a tool carrier 22 is moved across the surface of the plate along the phantom line 38 such that three diamond tools remove a portion of the surface of the window. <IMAGE>
