In a propcess for producing pure magnesium oxide for the introduction of refractory materials, from magnesium silicate or hydrous magnesium silicate materials such as olivine, serpentine, garnierite or similar, the starting material is broken down with hydrochloric acid and the residues remaining are separated from the sludge produced during breakdown. The sesquioxides, which are regarded as impurities, and other impurities are precipitated by adding raw serpentine to the raw brine so obtained in order to increase the pH. The precipitate is separated, the solution of magnesium chloride so obtained is decomposed by heating, in particular by spray roasting, during which magnesium oxide is obtained and hydrogen chloride gas is recovered. |
