<p>A relatively fast method of curing elastomer-modified epoxy resin formulations is provided which produces highly toughened epoxy polymers. The method consists of providing a mixture of 100 parts by weight of an epoxy resin, from 12.5 to 25 parts by weight a carboxyl-terminated polybutadiene/acrylonitrile (CTBN) liquid elastomer, and from 2 to 10 parts by weight of an aliphatic heterocyclic amine curing agent, and curing the mixture at a temperature of 135°C to 190°C for 2 to 10 hours. The amine is preferably piperidine. In comparison with an identical resin formulation cured under conventional curing conditions (120°C for 16 hours), the product of the present method exhibits an up to seven-fold improvement in toughness (as measured by fracture energy GIC) with little or no reduction in glass transition temperature or modulus of elasticity.</p> |
