In a video tape recorder with a cylindrical scanning device, mutually coplanar tape reels preferably being provided in a cassette, the axes of the reels and of the scanning device are arranged perpendicularly with respect to a first plane. For guiding and transporting the tape, a plurality of rollers are provided. The axes of a first group of rollers, located in the region of the reels, are perpendicular with respect to a first plane. Ahead of and behind the scanning device, seen in the running direction of the tape, there is in each case a further group of rollers, the axes of which are in each case perpendicular with respect to a second plane and with respect to a third plane. The transition from one plane to the other takes place in the associated track lines by torsion. Two planes are designed such that run-in and run-out tangents of the tape from the coil lie in them.
