A method is described for the determination of the liquid content of containers which are filled partly with gas and partly with liquid. In the method the volume of gas present in the container following a compression or expansion process is determined from the work delivered or extracted in the course of the compression or expansion and the consequent change in the pressure of the gas. The liquid volume is then determined from the difference between the presumed-known predetermined container volume and the gas volume.
