The steering column attachment for a motor vehicle has a deformation element between a steering bracket held on the body and a protective steering tube. The deformation element comprises an energy-absorbing plate which is connected to a strap on the protective steering tube and comprises deformation portions which are arranged in a manner corresponding to longitudinal slots in the strap and in which displacement pins penetrating the deformation portions are guided. The energy-absorbing plates are arranged between a lower support element of the strap and upper guide elements arranged parallel thereto. The latter are supported on the steering bracket of the body and comprise longitudinal slots which are arranged in a manner which corresponds to further longitudinal slots in the strap support element. The elements extend over the entire length of the plate-side deformation portions and the latter are limited laterally by the longitudinal slots.
