PURPOSE:To reduce the total length of body of hydraulic lifter to be installed in a valve mechanism of an internal combustion engine by a method wherein an oil passage communicating its pressure chamber with a reservoir is of such a construction as it may not cross a leak clearance. CONSTITUTION:This hydraulic lifter 10 to be installed between the upper end surface of a valve stem 16 and a cam surface 21a of a cam shaft 21 has a reservoir 24 defined between an outer body 22 and an inner body 23 integrally connected to the outer body. A ring member 25 having U-shaped section is arranged in the reservoir 24 to divide it into the first and second reservoirs 26, 27 and the first reservoir 26 is connected to an oil supplying source through an oil supplying hole 28. A plunger 30 is slidably arranged in the inner body 23 and a leak clearance 31 is formed between both of them 23 and 30. The pressure chamber 33 is communicated with the reservoir 27 through a check valve 39, the second oil passage 38, and the first oil passage 37 between a cylindrical member 36 and the ring member 25. |
