Novel naphthalocyanine derivatives of formula (I) wherein k, l, m and n, which may be the same or different, are zero or integers of 1 to 4, k + l + m + n being an integer of 1 or more; the groups R<1> which may be the same or different when k + l + m + n > 1, are alkyl substituted alkyl, or aryl; M is Si, Ge or Sn; and the groups Y, which may be the same or different, are aryloxy, alkoxy, trialkylsiloxy, triarylsiloxy, trialkoxysiloxy, triarylkyloxysiloxy, trityloxy or acyloxy are useful for forming a recording layer in an optical recording medium.
