<p>Speed control device for an alternator (1) driven by a hydraulic turbine (2) and jointly controlled by way of a control element (3) able to modulate the energy received by the turbine, as well as by a controllable absorbing electrical network (5) connected up at the output of the alternator in parallel with an independent application network (4) charged with feeding the said alternator. The device comprises means for determining a first difference existing between the power delivered by the water, at a given instant, to the unit formed by the turbine and the given alternator and the power which the water will deliver to the unit in the steady state for the position of the control element at the same moment; means for determining a second difference existing between the power delivered by the turbine and the electrical power consumed; means for comparing between first and second simultaneously determined differences, which act on the control element on opening or on closing depending on which of the two simultaneously measured differences is the larger.
