[Also in Group II] A furnace for the reduction of iron ore is supplied from a hopper 4 with a mixture of iron ore and flux which are allowed to fall freely through the furnace till they reach a bath of iron 7. This bath is continuously replenished with carbon by means of a supply pipe 8 which injects an emulsion of coal in oil. Burners 5, which heat the furnace at the beginning of the operation, can be used during production to supply air, and oxygen may be supplied from nozzles 18. Iron and slag are removed at tap holes 15 and 16, and waste gases leave through pipes 13, 14 and 12.</p> |
