An image picture reading device has a light source for illuminating an original, a series of sensors arranged in a line for detecting densities of small areas of the original by light reflected from the original, a reading circuit for sequentially outputting density signals corresponding to the thus-detected densities and a buffer for storing and outputting the density signals sequentially received from the reading circuit. The buffer is reset to an initial state at constant intervals and the device includes a setting switch for inputting a control value, a buffer control for setting a reset pulse cycle for the buffer for determining a period over which picture density signals are accumulated corresponding to the control value input by the setting switch and a light source control circuit for controlling the light intensity of the light source in accordance with the control value.
