PURPOSE:To prevent run-out of an ink ribbon or misuse of a ribbon cassette from occurring, by detecting the trailing end of the ink ribbon before recording by shifting the ribbon cassette to a use position, immediately after a power supply for a recorder is switched on and immediately after a cover is closed. CONSTITUTION:When a power supply for a recorder is switched on, detection of the trailing end of an ink ribbon 5 is carried out under the control of a controlling circuit 11. With the power supply for the recorder switched on, the controlling circuit 11 shifts up an ink ribbon cassette 4 when a cover of the recorder is closed. Next, a detector 9 is driven to check whether a detection output of the trailing end of the ink ribbon 5 is supplied. When the trailing end of the ribbon 5 is detected, an alarm buzzer 17 is driven until the cover is opened, thereby prompting the operator to replace the ribbon cassette 4. When the trailing end of the ribbon 5 is not detected, the cassette 4 is shifted down, each mechanism is initialized, and then a recording operation is carried out according to an input from an input part 10.
