PURPOSE:To produce a porous body which has relatively large fine gaps and excellent heat insulating characteristic by inserting inorg. pillars or further org. pillars between the layers of layered inorg. compds. dispersed and swollen in a solvent, then drying this liquid dispersion. CONSTITUTION:A material such as swellable clay mineral is the aggregate of the swellable layered inorg. compds. A1. The solvent 5 is incorporated between layers 1 and 1 and the compds. A1 swell when the liquid dispersion is prepd. by dispersing the compd. A1 which is the chief material into the solvent such as water. The inorg. pillars 21 are inserted between the layers 1 and 1 by hydrolyzing, for example, metal alcoholate to form a polymer, making the polymer into the inorg. pillars and adding and mixing the pillars to and with the above-mentioned liquid dispersion. The org. pillars of a water soluble high- polymer compd., etc., when compounded, widen the spacings between the layers 1 and 1 and are held therebetween; in addition, said pillars detain the inorg. pillars 21 between the layers and hold the same while keeping the spacings between the layers force expanded. The compds. A1 are fixed in the dispersed state by drying such liquid dispersion by a freeze-drying method, etc., by which the porous body is obtd.
