PURPOSE:To enable mail matter to be postmarked through arranging the postmarking position, by optically scanning both sides of mail matter, performing photoelectric conversion to obtain binary-coded data, detecting the side on which an address is written and the address writing direction, and arranging the address writing direction. CONSTITUTION:When mail matter 1 is passed through the position of a face side detector 9a and a back side detector 9b, the face side of the mail matter is detected by optical scanning. When an address part 3 on the face side 1a is detected by the face side detector 9a, the main matter is fed to a feeding part 13 through a 180 deg. reversion. Similarly, mail matter 1C is fed to the feeding part 13 through a straight route 11. Mail matter 1B an address part 3 of which is detected by the back side detector 9b is fed to the feeding part 13 through the straight route 11, and mail matter 1D is fed to the feeding part 13 through a reversing route 12. Based on the results of discrimination of the address writing direction detected by the detectors 9a, 9b, mail matter in the same condition as the mail matter 1B is stamped by operating a stamper 14a, whereas mail matter in the same condition as the mail matter 1C is stamped by operating a stamper 14b. Thereafter, the mail matter is piled by operating a switch 15 based on the results of discrimination of the address writing direction.
