The device is arranged on prepayment machines. It comprises a coin circulation corridor (1), identification means and a switching chain (5, 4, 2) for directing the coins towards a cash box (12) or a change return receptacle (11). The switching chain comprises a cylinder (5), on which a double groove is engraved and which is driven by a bidirectional motor (6). The groove is followed by a tracer (4) arranged to cause a retaining vane (2) to pivot. Depending on the direction of rotation of the motor, the coins are directed towards one or the other of the two switching tracks.
