PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a production intermediate for pharmaceuticals and ferroelectric liquid crystals, with a simple process without necessitating a number of steps, by using optically active alkyl glycidyl ethers as starting substance and reacting with lithium aluminum hydride. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula I (R is 1-20C alkyl) can be produced by using optically active alkyl glycidyl ethers as starting substance and reacting the substances with lithium aluminum hydride in a solvent such as diethyl ether at -20-100 deg.C, preferably 0-70 deg.C. The above starting substance can be produced from alkyl aryl ethers utilizing Nocardia corallina which is an epoxide-producing strain belonging to Nocardia genus. The alkyl glycidyl ether used as a starting substance is e.g. the compound of formula III.
