PURPOSE:To obtain an agricultural and horticultural germicide.herbicide, containing 1-benzyl-3-p-nitrileurea derivative having unsubstituted alpha-positions as an active ingredient, having phytotoxicity relieving action and capable of exhibiting effects in a small amount of chemical. CONSTITUTION:An agricultural and horticultural germicide.herbicide containing 0.1-90wt.% compound expressed by the formula (R is H or lower alkyl). The compound expressed by the formula is capable of widely acting on annual weeds, such as barnyard millet or monochoria, and perennial weeds, such as bulrush or water nutgrass, and almost completely weeding in an amount as small as <=50g per 10 ares and exhibiting excellent germicidal effects on sheath blight of rice plant, powdery mildew, gray mold, clubroot of brassicaceous vegetables, etc., by low-concentration spraying. Furthermore, phytotoxicity symptoms of sulfonylurea based herbicides manifested in paddy rice are markedly reduced and killing effects on barnyard millet are simultaneously improved by adding the afore-mentioned compound in a small amount to the above- mentioned herbicides. The compound expressed by the formula is inexpensive and has high safety with low toxicity to humans, animals and fishes.
