PURPOSE:To detect torque highly accurately, by forming an anisotropic band of induced magnetism on the surface layer of a rotary shaft itself, and detecting the change in permeability at said part. CONSTITUTION:An anisotropic region 11, into which induced magnetism anisotropy is imparted, is provided on the surface layer of a rotary shaft 10 of a torque sensor as a readily magnetizing axis. The region 11 has an approximately strip shape, which has a suitable width. The entire outer surface of the shaft is wound around with the region 11. The induced magnetism anisotropy in the anisotropic region 11 is imparted at a constant slant angle (alpha) with respect to the circumferential direction at any position of the outer surface. An exciting winding 20 and a detecting winding 40 are arranged in a rotary symmetry pattern with respect to the rotary shaft 10 in the vicinity of the anisotropic region 11. When torque T is applied to the rotary shaft 10, the permeability of the anisotropic region 11 is changed. Accordingly, the change in inductance generated in the detecting coil 40 is outputted to an AC voltmeter 50 as the change in induced voltage caused by the mutual induction between the detecting winding 40 and the exciting winding 20.
