PURPOSE:To obtain a novel underwater antifouling coating, consisting of a substance prepared by removing a water-soluble ingredient from a methyl alcohol extract of Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb. et Zucc., without toxicity and capable of exhibiting excellent antifouling effects and underwater antifouling coating using the above-mentioned antifouling agent. CONSTITUTION:A novel antifouling agent obtained by shredding and drying Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb. at Zucc. collected in fields and mountains, adding methyl alcohol to provide an extract then adding benzene to dissolve the above- mentioned extract, washing the solution with water to afford water-soluble components, subsequently extracting the water-soluble components with n-butanol and washing the obtained extract with water to remove the water-soluble components. This novel antifouling agent in an amount of 1-80wt.%, preferably 5-70wt.% is blended in coatings.
