NEW MATERIAL:A bornene derivative of formula I [R<1> is -CO2R<3> (R<3> is 1-5C alkyl), R<4>OH (R<4> is 1-5C alkylene); R<2> is one selected from groups of formulas II, III, IV and V). USE:It is used as a synthetic intermediate of alkaloids which are used as medicines, because they have unique actions such as hypotension, sedation and tranquilizer. Alkaloids are synthesized from the compound through multichiral compounds such as loganin or secologanin. PREPARATION:An alpha,beta-unsaturated ester derived from a saccharide, usually D-mannitol, is allowed to react with cyclopentadiene in the presence of a Lewis acid to give the compound of formula I.
