PURPOSE:To confirm the clogging of a head easily by providing a detection section to confirm an output level of the head and a decision section deciding the clock of the head. CONSTITUTION:When a head B106b is turned around and in contact with a magnetic tape 107, the tape 107 starts running in reverse direction and heads B106b, A106a read the signal recorded on the tape 107. A readout head reproducing output 114 is amplified by a reproducing amplifier 109, sent to a head output detection circuit 110 to detect the head output level. The circuit 110 decides the head output level and outputs the result to a decision section 111. The decision section 111 decides it that the head is clogged when the head output is reduced abnormally based on the output of the circuit 110. Then the result of decision is displayed on a display section 112.
