PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain the titled polymer having excellent water absorption ability, water holding ability, gel strength, etc., by blending an aqueous monomer solution containing an alkaline metal salt of acrylic acid and polyepoxy compound with a specific photopolymerization initiator and irradiating the resultant blend with ultraviolet rays. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous monomer solution containing (A) an alkaline metal salt of acrylic acid and (B) a polyepoxy compound is initially blended with (C) an amidino group-containing water-soluble azo compound as a photopolymerization initiator. The above-mentioned blend is then irradiated with ultraviolet rays normally at 200-450nm wavelength, preferably at 200-2,000mJ/cm<2> quantity of light, polymerized and crosslinked to afford the aimed polymer. Furthermore, ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether, etc., are preferred as the component (B) and 2,2'-azobis(N,N'-dimethyleneisobutylamidine) dihydrochloride, etc., are preferred as the component (C).
