PURPOSE:To transmit a digital information signal with consistency with an existing data transmission format by dividing a prescribed time corresponding to the rotational frequency of rotary heads into the integer number of sections, transmitting a digital information signal in a range determined by the prescribed number of bits counted from the peak value of each section and recording additional data indicating the peak values. CONSTITUTION:Since the period of the rotary heads 2A, 2B is fixed even if sampling frequencies are different, the number of sections divided from said period is a prescribed number independently of the sampling frequency. A ranging index data is recorded in an idle area of a recording area. The recording area for the ranging index data is regulated by a prescribed word number even if the sampling frequencies are different. Since the ranging index data is important data in case of executing reverse processing to recording processing to restore data at the time of reproducing, the same ranging index data is doubly recorded. Since the doubly recorded ranging index data are recorded on respectively separated positions of a magnetic tape by interleaving processing, the influence of an error is reduced. Consequently, the consistency of the data transmission with the existing data transmission format can be held.
