PURPOSE:To eliminate the intrusion of foreign matter and to obtain an optical fiber having a low loss and excellent mechanical property by transferring a polymer which is completed of polymn. in an airtight cylinder directly to a spinning head, spinning the same as a fiber core and taking off the fiber after cladding material thereon. CONSTITUTION:A polymn. initiator and a chain transfer agent are added and mixed to and with a refined monomer. The mixture is supplied from a vessel 1 through a tank 2 into an airtight cylinder 4 provided with an extrusion ram 8, where the mixture is polymerized to a specified viscosity at 80-150 deg.C under atmospheric pressure -10kg/cm<2> in an inert gaseous atmosphere by a stirrer 7; thereafter the stirrer 7 is pulled from the inside of the cylinder 4 and the polymn. is completed in succession. The inside of the cylinder 4 is heated to the softening temp. of the polymer or above under the reduced pressure and the residual monomer is removed therefrom, then the polymer 6 is extruded by a cylinder 8 into a spinning head 9. A cladding device is connected to the head 9 to feed a cladding material by a gear pump 12, and the optical fiber is taken off in an arrow direction. |
