PURPOSE:To file and display a natural picture by providing a multi-level picture memory, a TV camera, a black/white value generating part for binary/multilevel conversion, a compounding part, a highly precise multilevel display interface, and a highly precise multilevel display. CONSTITUTION:The image of an original including the halftone which is inputted from a TV camera 10 is converted into the multilevel digital picture data are stored temporarily in a multilevel picture memory 12. Then the multilevel digital picture data is compounded with the digital picture data received from a binary picture memory 1 and converted into a multilevel form via a compounding part 13 and displayed on a highly precise multilevel display 15 via a highly precise multilevel display interface 14. At the same time, the binary digital picture data which are inputted from a binary picture scanner 2 and read out of an optical disk are converted into the multilevel digital picture data by the memory 1 via a highly precise binary display interface 8 and a black/white value generating part 9. In such a way, the natural pictures are obtained.
