PURPOSE:To obtain the title catalyst consisting of a specified solid catalyst component, a silicon compd. and an organoaluminum compd., and exhibiting a high activity, wherein the catalyst residue remaining in the polymer formed can be so minimized and the remaining chlorine is in such a minute amount that ash removal is unnecessary. CONSTITUTION:The title polymn catalyst consists of a solid catalyst component A, a silicon compd. B of the formula as shown (where R is alkyl, cycloalkyl, etc.; R' is alkyl; 0<=m<4) and an organoaluminum compd. C, wherein the solid catalyst component A is prepared by mixing 1pt.wt. product obtd. by reacting metallic aluminum powder with at least twice the mol. of an alkyl monohalide kin the absence of any solvent and in the presence of iodine with at most 2pts.wt. tetraalkoxytitanium, an acyl halide, an aliph. hydrocarbon which is liquid at -30-50 deg.C and an aliph. alcohol which is liquid at -30-50 deg.C to give a homogeneous soln. adding the soln. dropwise to TiCl4 at 0 deg.C or below in such a manner as to cause no precipitation, heating the obtd. soln. under stirring to separate a solid substance, adding thereto a diester of phthalic acid at 80 deg.C or above under further stirring to give a solid product, separating the product and bringing it into contact with TiCl4 in the presence of an aromatic hydrocarbon which is liquid at normal temp.
