A furnace burning a solid fuel comprises a combustion chamber (1) having in its lower portion a slag chamber (2) with a slag hole (3) communicating with a passage for discharging molten slag into a slag reducing bath (5). A bottom (7) of the slag reducing bath (5) has an angle of inclination which changes relative to the horizontal in the direction from an inlet (4) to an outlet (9). The lowermost section of the bottom (7) is provided with a sump (13). An injector (16) for delivery of the reducing agent to the slag is installed in a roof (6) of the bath opposite the bottom section (12) which has the maximum angle of inclination relative to the horizontal. Reduction of ferri oxides and silicon to FeSi takes place and this is drained from sump (13).
