PURPOSE:To increase the measurement parameters of the mark length and at the same time setting automatically the boundary value between marks, by counting the marks of an information recording medium. CONSTITUTION:An measuring means 6 is used for measurement of the lengths of plural types of marks together with a boundary value setting means 33 which sets the boundary value for counting marks and discrimination of the mark types by applying the statistic processing to the measurement value of the measuring means 6, and a mark counting means 22 which counts the marks for each type. Then the lengths of marks of plural types are measured and the statistic processing is applied to these measurement values. Thus the boundary value is set for counting marks and decision of the mark types and the marks are counted for each type. Thus it is possible to increase the measurement parameters of the mark length and also to automatically set the boundary value.
