The invention relates to a process for the regeneration of exhausted hydrogenation catalysts, from the hydrogenation of fatty acid methyl esters, based on copper and zinc, the hydrogenation catalyst being washed with a solvent, the inorganic constituents being dissolved under oxidative conditions by a solution containing inorganic and/or organic acid(s), the acidic solution, separated off as desired from undissolved constituents, being made alkaline and the heavy metal ions present being precipitated. The precipitates separated off are then processed in a manner known per se to give hydrogenation catalysts of the desired composition.
