An apparatus for receiving and compacting waste, in which at least one compacting roller which can be rotated about a horizontal axis rotates in a circular pattern on the waste and is raised as the volume of waste increases, is to be so designed such that it can be installed in public places and is assessible to the general public, the intention being that the costs incurred for collecting and removing the refuge be capable of being recorded. To this end, provision is made, according to the invention, for the compacting apparatus to be arranged within a closed housing, a feed shaft with a feed apperture being provided above the compacting apparatus. When in the open state, the said feed apperture receives waste while the feed shaft is simultaneously closed, so that the waste cannot pass into the compacting apparatus, the feed shaft being opened after closure of the apperture in order to convey the waste away into the compacting apparatus. <IMAGE>
