It is known to provide on a continuously running pipe-welding installation a cutting-off unit which is displaceable parallel to the pipe, is brought during the cutting-off to the running speed of the pipe to be cut to length and is returned after the parting cut is made. In the process, the cutting-off unit is firmly clamped to a point of the pipe which cannot be exactly determined and is carried along by the pipe while the parting cut is being made. However, the lengths of pipe section are inexact. Since a certain pipe length continues to be produced during the return of the cutting-off unit, relatively short lengths of pipe section cannot be produced. The invention provides for a second cutting-off unit 13 to be arranged at the side of the pipe 11 to be cut to length remote from the first cutting-off unit 12. The second cutting-off unit 13 and the first cutting-off unit 12 come into use alternately. The second cutting-off unit 13 cuts off a pipe piece when the first cutting-off unit 12 returns into its initial position, and vice versa. The cutting-off units 12, 13 are driven in synchronism with the continuously moving pipe 11 by separate drive motors 17. They are controlled by an electronic measuring and control device 20 which is interconnected with a sensor 19 sensing the running speed of the pipe 11 to be cut to length. This permits precise cutting-to-length of the pipe 11 and short lengths of pipe section can also be obtained. <IMAGE>
